Here are a few tips for enhancing your scanned
images in Photoshop.
General
Always work on a copy of your scan so you can revert to the
original file in the future. If you want to edit colour balance,
contrast and so forth it is best to specify a 16bit version
of the file (you will need Photoshop CS or better to edit
16bit files). The larger colour space means that you make
changes to the image without significantly affecting the underlying
data. If you make changes to an 8-bit file you will see gaps
appearing in the histogram indicating that data has been lost
in the process.
Histogram
I always scan to ensure as much detail as possible is captured
from your original. You can some times improve the appearance
of the image by tweaking the shadow and highlight points -
sacrificing a small amount of data for improved contrast.
Go to IMAGE>ADJUSTMENTS>LEVELS.
Saturation
I do not make any adjustments to colour saturation when I
scan your work. You may like to increase saturation a little
to give the image more 'punch', especially if you are making
a print. To increase saturation select IMAGE>ADJUSTMENTS>SATURATION
and move the saturation slider to the right. Start at around
10 or 15.
